Overwhelmed, God’s Way: Finding Peace in the Immeasurable Love of God
“How are you?”
“Overwhelmed.”
It has become one of the most common answers to one of the most common questions.
We’re overwhelmed by our to-do lists, overwhelmed by notifications, overwhelmed by work, family, expectations, decisions and the relentless noise of modern life. There always seems to be something else demanding our attention, something else that needs doing, someone else who needs us.
And somehow, overwhelmed has become almost synonymous with normal.
We wear busyness like a badge of honour. We squeeze more into already-full days, answer messages while doing something else, think about tomorrow while trying to enjoy today, and lie in bed at night mentally scrolling through everything we haven’t managed to get done.
But what if we turned the word on its head?
What if being overwhelmed didn’t mean having more than we could cope with?
What if, instead, we allowed ourselves to be completely overwhelmed by something far greater?
The overwhelming love of God.
What if we were overwhelmed by God’s love?
Overwhelmed by the fact that the God who created the universe knows your name.
Overwhelmed that He sees every part of you — the beautiful, the broken, the confident and the uncertain — and still calls you His.
Overwhelmed that His love isn’t dependent on how productive you have been today. Maybe you need to read that again. And again ;-)
God’s love for you isn’t earned by getting everything right.
It doesn’t disappear when you fail.
It isn’t withdrawn when you are tired, distracted, messy or unsure of what comes next.
His love simply is.
Paul prayed that we might have the power to grasp how wide, long, high and deep is the love of Christ — a love that surpasses knowledge. (Ephesians 3:18–19)
A love too big to fully comprehend.
Perhaps that is the kind of overwhelm we need.
Not the kind that leaves us exhausted and scrabbling to keep up, but the kind that leaves us standing still, resting in wonder.
The kind that makes us whisper, “How can this be? That He would love me this much?”
When feeling overwhelmed becomes the norm
Feeling overwhelmed can become so familiar that we stop questioning it. We assume everyone is busy. Everyone is tired. Everyone has too much to do. So we keep going. But constantly living under the weight of everything can leave us believing that everything depends on us.
Our families.
Our work.
Our relationships.
Our futures.
Our finances.
Our plans.
Our dreams.
And underneath it all can be the quiet belief that somehow, if we don't hold everything together, everything will fall apart. But here is the beautiful truth:
We were never created to carry everything.
God does not ask you to be God. He does a pretty exceptional job of that Himself ;-) He doesn’t ask that you hold it all together. What He does ask is that you trust Him. His hands are big enough to hold it all.
Feeling overwhelmed can become so familiar that we stop questioning it.
God’s way of dealing with overwhelm
The world’s overwhelm says:
“Everything depends on you.”
God’s love says:
“Cherished child, depend on ME.”
The world tells us to try harder, do more, keep up and hold everything together. God invites us to come to Him. To lay down our burdens. To receive His grace for today rather than borrowing tomorrow’s troubles. To remember that we are not the Saviour of our own lives. We were never meant to be.
There is a freedom in acknowledging that. We can care without carrying everything. We can take responsibility without believing everything rests on our shoulders. We can work hard without believing our worth is measured by our output. We can love our families without believing we have to control their lives. And we can step into each day knowing that the God who calls us His is already there to meet us. Together we can face whatever comes our way.
Your identity isn't found in what you accomplish
Perhaps this is where overwhelm and identity collide. When our worth becomes tangled up with what we achieve, how much we accomplish or how well we think we're doing, life can become exhausting. Because there is always another goal. Another expectation. Another comparison. Another thing to prove.
But your identity in Christ doesn't work like that.
Before you achieved anything, God loved you.
Before anyone applauded you, God knew you.
Before you had a successful career, a tidy home, well-behaved children, a full calendar or an impressive list of achievements, you were His.
Your identity is not something you have to earn. It is something you receive. And when we really begin to understand that, some of the pressure starts to lift.
We are not the Saviour of our own lives.
Overwhelmed by grace, not pressure
So the next time someone asks, “How are you?” and overwhelmed springs to mind, pause. Take a breath. Look up. And remember that there is another way to be overwhelmed.
Overwhelmed by grace.
Overwhelmed by goodness.
Overwhelmed by mercy.
Overwhelmed by love.
Overwhelmed by the God who knows you completely and loves you completely.
Overwhelmed by the truth that your identity isn’t something you have to construct, earn or defend.
You are His.
And when that truth begins to sink in, though the noise doesn’t necessarily disappear, it begins to lose its power. The emails can wait. The washing will still be there. The unanswered message isn’t an emergency. The list may not all get ticked.
You don’t have to prove your worth by how much you accomplish before your head hits the pillow tonight. You can simply stop for a moment and receive.
Receive His love.
Receive His grace.
Receive the reminder that you are seen, known and truly adored.
Overwhelmed, God’s way.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t to make our lives smaller. The best thing to do is to make HIM bigger. To make our view of His love bigger.
And perhaps that is the kind of overwhelmed we could all do with a little more of.
A Scripture to carry with you
“And I pray that you… may have power… to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.”
Ephesians 3:17–18
Today, when the noise gets loud, come back to be overwhelmed by these truths:
You are deeply loved.
You are completely known.
You belong to God.
And His is the only voice that matters. So be overwhelmed with what He says about you instead of all the other stuff!
What if being overwhelmed didn’t mean having more than we could cope with?
What if, instead, we allowed ourselves to be completely overwhelmed by something far greater?
The immeasurable love of God.
