New Season: Taking the Next Steps and Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus
There are seasons in life when you know something is changing, even before you can explain exactly what it is.
What once felt familiar no longer feels quite the same, and although you may not know what is coming next, somewhere deep within you there is a sense that God is calling you forward.
The question is, which voice will you listen to?
There are so many competing voices: the voice of fear telling you to stay where it is safe, the voice of comparison telling you that you should be further ahead, and the voice of other people's expectations telling you what success ought to look like.
And then there is another voice.
Quieter perhaps, but infinitely more important.
The voice of God.
At He Calls Me, we call it The Only Voice That Matters.
My own new season
I'm writing this from within a new season of my own.
I have recently stepped away from a salaried job and a well-known profession. It was a career that brought security, but also something harder to leave behind: the extrinsic respect and understanding that comes with having a recognised role. People know what it means to be a teacher, (at least they think they do!) and you know where you fit. I was part of a fabulous team where daily connection and camaraderie filled my bucket. But the job also had its challenges, many of which were emotional and less obvious to onlookers.
Walking away from that certainty has meant stepping into something much less defined.
Yet beneath the uncertainty has been a conviction I can no longer ignore.
I need to write.
I need to unlock everything God has put within me and communicate His message through my words. I want to connect with others who are navigating their own seasons of faith, uncertainty and change, and build a community where we encourage one another to keep tuning into the Only Voice That Matters.
God's voice.
I don't know exactly where this new season will take me, but perhaps that's the point. God doesn't always give us the whole journey. Sometimes He gives us the next step.

You Don't Need the Whole Map
Hebrews 11:8 tells us that Abraham went when God called him, even though he did not know where he was going.
He had a promise, but not a detailed plan.
Sometimes faith looks like that.
It means trusting God enough to take the next step without knowing where the road will eventually lead.
Perhaps you're standing at the beginning of something new yourself. Maybe you've been praying for direction, wondering whether to leave something behind, begin something different or finally pursue something God has been placing on your heart.
You don't have to have every answer before you begin.
Ask God, “What is my next step?”
Then listen.
And when you hear Him, be brave enough to take it.
don’t despise small beginnings
We can sometimes imagine that if God is doing something important, it must begin with something dramatic.
But Zechariah 4:10 reminds us not to despise small beginnings.
A seed doesn't look like a tree. A first step doesn't look like a finished journey. One article doesn't look like a community, and one brave decision doesn't look like a completely transformed life.
But small things matter.
My own new season is teaching me to become comfortable with beginning… again. To write even when I cannot see the finished picture. To trust that what God has placed within me has purpose, even before I know exactly what He will do with it.
Perhaps your beginning looks small too.
Don't dismiss it.
If God is asking you to take the step, its size does not determine its significance.
Keep Looking Up
When the future feels uncertain, it is easy to look down.
We look at the practicalities, the risks and how far we still have to go. We compare ourselves with others and wonder whether we have made the right decision.
Psalm 121 begins, “I lift up my eyes.”
That is the posture I want to carry into this season.
Look up.
Remember where your help comes from.
There will always be other voices, some loud and some persuasive. But we can keep returning to the One who knows us completely, who created us and who calls us by name.
The Only Voice That Matters.
while you're walking keep looking up
your next step
If you're standing at the beginning of a new season, don't overwhelm yourself by trying to work out the entire journey.
Ask God what He is asking of you today.
Then take that step.
It might feel small. It might feel uncomfortable. You might not feel ready.
Take it anyway.
And while you're walking, keep looking up.
You don't need to know exactly where you're going when you know who is calling you.
He is the one that calls you. He calls me.
Keep tuning into the Only Voice That Matters.
